What you can ask your insurer
California gives you four specific things you are entitled to ask for. Here they are.
- Your property level wildfire risk score The score the carrier holds for your address, as it is used to price your policy.
- Where that score sits in the range A score on its own means little. Ask where it falls relative to the rest of the book.
- A property specific explanation Which characteristics of your property drive that score, stated for your property rather than in general terms.
- What each listed measure would do to your policy For each measure on the statutory list, the effect on your own policy if you put it in place. Only your carrier can answer that.
A revised score after you do the work
If you complete one of the listed measures, you can ask your carrier for an updated wildfire risk score, and it has thirty days to give you one. This is the step most people miss. Doing the work and never telling anyone leaves the record where it was.
How to make the request
Put it in writing, address it to your carrier rather than to your agent alone, and attach your documentation. Your action plan gives you the inventory to send.
